What the Moka?
We can thank Alfonso Bialetti for the Moka pot, which he invented in Italy in 1933. You might not know it as a Moka Pot but will undoubtedly have seen these iconic stove top coffee pots before, but why should you use one?
The pot consists of three parts;
- Bottom Chamber
- FilterTop
- Chamber
Water goes in the bottom (more about this in a moment), you put your ground coffee in the filter and then screw on the top chamber where your coffee will come out when ready.
The heat from your stove generates steam which causes pressure to build up in the bottom chamber, this forces the water up through the coffee in the filter and great tasting coffee appears in the top chamber.
Without the need for an expensive kit, you can have a superior tasting coffee.
Aluminium Vs. Stainless Steel
The pots come in different shapes and sizes and most commonly are made from aluminium. But with more homes having induction hobs over gas appliances, you might be better opting for a stainless steel version so that you don’t find yourself having to buy an induction plate.
Beware that some induction compatible pots made from aluminium are actually too small to activate the induction hob and you might end up needing to get a plate anyway - so keep your receipt if you do go this way!
